JAVELIN (FGM-148) anti-tank missile

In 1983, the US Army submitted a request for the development of a new anti-tank missile to replace the outdated M-47 Dragon missiles. This was the AAWS-M (Advanced Anti-Tank Weapon System—Medium) program, which began development in 1985 and ended in 1996 when the first missiles began to be delivered. Designated FGM-148 Javelin, it is a “fire and forget” missile with automatic infrared guidance, a maximum range of 4,750 meters, and a warhead capable of destroying any type of armored vehicle, including MBTs.
