North American FJ-4 / 4B FURY fighter-bomber
The FJ-4 Fury or F-1E, according to a later designation, was the multi role version of the US Navy’s Fury carrier fighters family. Both the FJ-1, FJ-2 and FJ-3 were designed for fighter missions exclusively, but after structural changes made to the new FJ-4 model, it was noted that the new aircraft could have good capabilities for attack missions. The FJ-4 had new “wet” type wings that allowed them to be filled with fuel, lighter weight, and a wider fuselage to increase its fuel capacity up to 50% more than previous versions. The final FJ-4B model was equipped with six underwings hardpoints that could be used to carry five Bullpup air-to-surface missiles, leaving one hardpoint to mount the missile’s guidance pod. They could carry bombs, rockets, or gun pods, even a tactical nuclear weapon under the wings. The FJ-4 was used only by four US Marine Corps Squadrons that put them in service in 1955. In addition, the FJ-4B was used by both the US Navy and the Marines, which operated 10 and 3 Squadrons respectively since 1956.
