AKERON MP (MMP) anti-tank missile
In 2009, the French Army was faced with the need to replace the old MILAN anti-tank missiles, which had been the basis of its anti-tank defence for several decades. The situation was so pressing that in 2010, 260 FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missiles and 76 firing posts were purchased for their fire-and-forget capability. Although MBDA offered its MILAN-ER missile to replace the older MILAN, the offer was not accepted because the missile did not have this capability. In 2011, a request was launched with the capabilities sought in the new missile and the tender was attended by MBDA-France with the MMP (Missile Moyenne Portée) (medium-range missile), Rafael with the Spike missile and Lockheed Martin/Raytheon with the Javelin missile. Finally, in 2013, the Directorate General of Armement (DGA) announced that MBDA-France had been the winner and was awarded an order for the MMP missile to be delivered to the French Army from 2017. In 2022, the manufacturer changed the commercial designation of MMP to “Akeron MP”.
