After some time and after studying several reports from the Schwere Panzer Abteilung 508, it was concluded that the “Berge-Wg Tiger” or “Bergepanzer Tiger Ausf E” found in Italy was actually a vehicle modified as a “charge-layer tank” or “demolition charge carrier” after being damaged by a mine at Isolla Bella in February 1944. According to reports from s.Pz.Abt.508, the vehicle was rescued between March 1 and 5, 1944 along with other Tiger E tanks damaged the previous week, with no information provided on when or where the transformation took place. Based on new data, this unique vehicle has been called “Ladungsleger Tiger” and could have been a vehicle to perform tasks similar to the Borgward B.I and B.II and the Goliath (Sd Kfz.302) and Goliath (Sd Kfz.303) vehicles. It is believed that the vehicle was abandoned, virtually intact, during the German retreat due to engine problems.
