In September 1943, all Bergetiger P were assigned in the “s.Pz.Jag.Abt.653”. or 653rd heavy tank destroyer battalion to support the Ferdinands. The Bergetiger P had a crane for loads up to 2 tonnes, which was disassembled during transport. The crane operator was in the rear of the hull along the vehicle’s commander.

In February 1944, a company from 653rd s.Pz.Jag.Abt. was transferred to Italy along with a Bergetiger P vehicle, participating in Anzio, Neptune and Cisterna combats.

In July 1944, the 653rd s.Pz.Jag.Abt. was reduced to a single company, denominating 614th company of heavy tank destroyers. This unit had four Bergetiger P in service. In February 1945 they received the even heavier Jagdtiger tank destroyer.
