KAREL DOORMAN class

In the early 90s the Dutch Navy put into service eight ships from the Karel Doorman multipurpose frigate class, which represented a breakthrough in the concept of use of this type of vessel. Usually the frigates are used for a mission type or two at the most, but the Karel Doorman can perform ASW, antiaircraft and anti-ship missions thanks to the variety of weapons they carry. They were the first frigates designed with stealth techniques and a very high automation in their systems that allow them to have a crew of only 150 people. During the 2004-2006 period, six of the eight Dutch frigates were sold to foreign navies, 2 for Belgium, 2 for Chile and 2 for Portugal and currently only 2 are in service with the Dutch Navy.
