KONI class

The Koni, or Project 1159, class frigates were built in the Zelenodolsk Shipyard of the Black Sea, but were designed to be exported to friendly countries of the USSR. From 1975 to 1988 only 14 units were built, which indicates that they did not have much success. They were divided into two subclasses. The Koni Type I were designed for European weather and the Type II for warmer weather with the assembly of air conditioning equipment between the funnel and the aft superstructure. The Soviet Navy only had one Koni frigate to train the foreign crews that bought such frigates. The two frigates sold to Yugoslavia were built carrying SS-N-2C Styx anti-ship missiles, being the most powerful in the whole class. Actually there are two Koni frigates in service, one in the Libyan Navy and another in the Bulgarian Navy.
