AFT-9 / HJ-9

China deployed the first AFT.9 anti-tank missile carriers in the late 90s, although it was in 1999 when they were publicly seen for the first time. The system fires the HJ-9 (Red Arrow 9) anti-tank missile, a long range laser guide missile very similar in appearance to the American TOW-2 missile. The system is formed by the WZ.550 light armored personnel carrier, which has been equipped with a turret launcher and all weather vision equipments. The launching turret assembles four missiles and is retractable inside the vehicle’s hull for long displacements. It carries 8 missiles for reloading and can be fired remotely. The vehicle is not amphibious but is airborne and could be transported by aircrafts such as the Shaanxi Y.8 or the C.130 Hercules. The AFT-9 is offered for the export market by China but the system has not been very successful at the moment.
