Patria ARVE 155mm self-propelled howitzer

The growing instability in some parts of the world has led to a boom in the defense industry, which sometimes fails to meet the demand for requested systems. Furthermore, for many countries, the cost of these cutting-edge systems is prohibitive, or at best, they cannot acquire the necessary or desired quantity. Therefore, each country attempts to update and improve some of its defense systems more economically, relying on domestic companies for these tasks. This has been the case with the Finnish company Patria, which decided to initiate a program to improve the effectiveness of the Finnish Army’s towed artillery by installing the Patria 155 GH 52 APU (155 K 98) 155mm howitzer on an 8×8 SISU E13TP truck. Design work began in 2015 but was halted in 2017. However, the start of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine provided the final impetus to restart the program. Finally, in March 2025, a new 155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzer prototype was unveiled under the designation “Patria ARVE” (ARtillery on VEhicle).
