VITTORIO VENETO
After the positive experiences with the Andrea Doria class ships, the Italian Navy decided to build two other new larger and more capable ships. These ships would be the Vittorio Veneto and Italia, but only the Vittorio Veneto would be manufactured. The concept and missions of the new ship were the same as the previous Andrea Doria class cruisers, but Vittorio Veneto could operate nine AB-212 ASW helicopters or six SH-3D Sea King helicopters and had a large below deck hangar instead of have it next to the flight deck. In the 80s the ship was modernized with new electronics, Standard SM-1ER anti-aircraft missiles and the installation of Otomat Mk.2 anti-ship missiles. The ship was put into reserve in 2003, and she was decommissioned in 2006.
