vz.77 DANA self-propelled howitzer (152mm variants)
In the late 1970s, the Czechoslovak People’s Army requested an indigenously developed 152mm self-propelled artillery system to avoid acquiring the Soviet 2S3 Akatsiya, which was the standard vehicle in the Warsaw Pact at the time. The company Konštrukta Trenčín then began designing a new vehicle under the designation “Samohybná Kanónová Húfnica vzor 77” (ShKH vz.77), translated as “self-propelled gun howitzer model 77”. This vehicle later became better known as DANA (Dělo Automobilní Nabíjené Automaticky), or “Self-loading gun on a truck chassis”. The novelty applied to this vehicle is the use of a modified 8×8 Tatra 815 truck chassis instead of a tracked chassis, making it the first wheeled self-propelled howitzer model manufactured worldwide.
