OURAGAN class
In 1965, the French Marine Nationale put into service a new LSD (Landing Ship Dock) class. This class was formed by the L-9021 Ouragan and the L-9022 Orage, that was entered service in 1968. These vessels had a well deck of 120 x 14 meters, able to submerge 3 meters. Two large 670 tonnes EDIC LCT (landing craft tanks) were accommodated on this deck to ferry the vehicles from the ship to the beach. Or instead, different types of smaller landing craft such as LCUs or LCMs are shipped for the same purpose. They could operate with 4 helicopters simultaneously, and in addition to its fixed flight deck, another removable 36-meter-long flight deck could be installed. In this way, the capacity of the well deck was reduced considerably. In logistics transport missions they carried up to 1,500 tons of equipment, while landing ship they could hold up to 350 troops or a maximum of 470 for a short period. Both vessels were decommissioned in 2007 when they were replaced by Mistral class LHDs.
