G6 RHINO 155mm self-propelled howitzer
In the late 1970s, the South African Defence Force (SADF) needed to replace its obsolete Sexton self-propelled tracked howitzers with a new, much more agile and powerful vehicle, better suited to the country’s terrain. Sandock Austral and Ermatek designed a vehicle that would be built by Littleton Engineering Works (LEW) (turret) and Vickers OMC (chassis). The first prototype, designated “G6 Renoster”, was unveiled in 1981 and was a heavy 6×6 wheeled vehicle armed with a 155/45mm howitzer. Production began in 1988 and continued until 1994, with 145 units manufactured. The G6, also known as Rhino, performed excellent mobility and long range, enabling it to move and engage in combat for extended periods, minimizing logistical support.
