ARCHER FH77BW L52 155mm self-propelled howitzer
In the mid-1990s, the Swedish Army needed a self-propelled howitzer to modernize its artillery, which was based on 155mm FH-77 towed howitzers and a few Bandkanon 1 self-propelled howitzers. After several years of development, in 2004, Bofors presented two prototypes of a 155mm self-propelled howitzer mounted on a 6×6 Volvo articulated chassis. In 2008, one of the prototypes was accepted for series production under the designation “ARCHER FH77BW L52”. After several years of testing and design changes due to technical issues, the Archer entered service with the Swedish Army in February 2016, demonstrating exceptional artillery capabilities. In September 2019, BAE Systems Bofors presented a new modular Archer system mounted on a Rheinmetall (MAN) RMMV HX2 8×8 truck which has the same artillery capabilities but improves its road performance.
