A-222 BEREG 130mm mobile coastal defence gun
In the mid-1970s, the Soviet Union needed a new mobile artillery system to defend its coast. Until then, this mission had been handled by towed 130mm SM-4 guns, which were already nearly obsolete for that purpose. In 1976, the Titan Design Bureau, belonging to the Barrikady company, began designing a new vehicle that would eventually be presented in 1988 as the “A-222 Bereg”. After several years of testing, it was publicly unveiled at the military-technical salon in Abu Dhabi in 1993. Although externally the A-222 Bereg is similar to other wheeled self-propelled howitzers such as the Czech Dana or the South African G6 Rhino, the essential difference is that the Soviet vehicle was specifically designed to defend the coast against landings and naval attacks and features a fire control system specially designed for that purpose, which makes it a unique weapons system. After more than 30 years, it is still in service with the 11th Independent Coastal Missile-Artillery Brigade belonging to the Coastal Troops of the Russian Navy.
