2A3 KONDENSATOR 2P
The 2A3 Kondensator 2P self-propelled howitzer was designed in the mid-1950s to give ground forces nuclear attack capability in a simple and fast way. For this purpouse, a 406mm howitzer was mounted on a T-10 tank chassis. The artillery part of the design was called “SM.54” and the Grabin Design Bureau was the responsible, while the automotive part of the design was called “Project, (Objekt), 271” and was made by the Kotlin Design Bureau of Leningrad. Only four examples were completed, and entered service in 1957. They were vehicles really difficult to transport and to operate, their gigantic size caused them constant mechanical breakdowns and the howitzer’s recoil usually provoked the break of the vehicle’s suspension. With the arrival of rockets and missiles, easier to deploy and more effective, all the 2A3 Kondensator were removed from service in the mid-60s.
