Elettra ship is popularly known as “spy ship”, because though she can develop marine research tasks, its main task is the gathering of all kind of information and communications signals. Her crew is composed by 30 sailors and 65 electronic technicians.

The Italian ship has a twin ship in service with the Taiwan Navy designated AGS-1601 Ta Kuan, although her propulsion system is composed by a conventional electric diesel engines. The Elettra carries almost 30 electronic recognition and surveillance systems operated by 65 operators.

The propulsion system consists of two diesel-generators engines from Wärtsilä, two permanent magnetic electric engines from ABB and two diesel-generators auxiliary engines from Isotta Fraschini. The vessel reaches 16.5 knots and has a range of 15,000 km at 12 knots.
