VBC-90
In 1979, Renault Vehicules Industriels presented at the Salon de Satory a vehicle designed for the export market that used many components from the VAB 4×4 and 6×6 armored vehicles. The vehicle, designated as VBC-90, mounted a Giat TS-90 turret armed with a powerful 90mm F4 rifled gun attached to an advanced fire control computer and a laser telemeter. These elements gave a 99% chance of hit the target at the first shot. The vehicle was a failure of sales and only the Sultanate of Oman ordered six vehicles in 1984. In 1985, the French National Gendarmerie commissioned 28 vehicles to equip two squads from the Mobile Gendarmerie Unit. The main missions of these Units are internal security and reconnaissance, for which perhaps the 90mm gun is too powerful. The VBC-90 is protected against small arms fire and artillery splinters and unlike the VAB personnel carrier is not amphibious. This capability was considered not to be necessary in the type of missions that it was going to face.
