AZP S-60

The Soviet 57mm AZP S-60 anti-aircraft gun has been the backbone of the divisional air defense troops for medium and low altitude combat in almost 60 countries since the 50s until the 80s. The project began in the late 40s to replace the 37mm AA guns with other powerful guns. Two German models were taken as the basis for the new Soviet guns, the 55mm Gerät 58 and the 50mm Flak.41 and in 1946 a prototype was presented. After the trials stage, the gun entered service in 1950. Initially the AZP S-60 batteries were controlled by the SON-9 system, This system was composed by the PUAZO 5A fire director and a distance measuring device designated as D-49. Later this equipment would be replaced by radars and digital fire calculators that increased their efficiency. These pieces have been used in numerous conflicts, from the Six Day War to the most recent battles in Syria. However, they have currently abandoned their role as anti-aircraft artillery and have been used for direct fire missions in support of ground troops.
