M-47 DRAGON (FGM-77)

In the 50s, the anti-tank defense was entrusted to recoilless guns and bazooka-type rockets and grenade launchers, but the improved mobility of the tanks made it more and more difficult to hit them on a battlefield full of vehicles that were moving at high speed. This is why the US Army decided in 1955 to import French SS-11 anti-tank missiles and begin a global program to replace guns and grenade launchers. In 1964 McDonell Aircraft started the M.A.W., (Medium Assault Weapon) program, that was finished in 1972 with the first order of the new FGM-77 or M.47 Dragon missile. The missile was wire-guided and its range was around 1,000 meters. It was shoulder-fired by a single operator and had a 2.4kg HEAT warhead that could penetrate 600mm of steel. The M.47 Dragon missile was used by many Arab and European countries and was replaced in the United States Forces by the FGM-148 Javelin missile in 2001.
