In 1974 the Italian Marina Militare commissioned the Sparviero fast attack patrol boat, the first of a class made up of 7 units, which had the main mission of attacking Soviet surface ships if they had entered the Mediterranean Sea in the event of war. Like its American contemporaries of the Pegasus class, its construction also suffered enormous delays, with 10 years passing between the delivery of the first ship and the last. The Sparviero class along with the Pegasus class were the only hydrofoil-type fast attack patrol vessels that entered service within NATO and their design served as the basis for the Japanese “PHM Ichi-go” class hydrofoil patrol vessels.
