R-36 / 8K67 (SS-9 SCARP)
After the deployment of the American Titan-2 ICBM missile, the Soviet Union began the development of a new missile in 1961 so as not to be left behind in the unstoppable nuclear escalation of that period. They were based on the powerful R-16/8K64 missile (NATO codename SS-7 Saddler), which had its range and warhead capacity improved, giving rise to the R-36/8K67 missile (NATO codename SS-9 Scarp). This missile was the first of the USSR to have a warhead with several MIRVs and one of its variants, the R-36O/8K69
(SS-9 mod.3) “Orbital” was a particularly dangerous missile, since it had almost unlimited autonomy as it could remain in orbit indefinitely. Four different variants of the SS-9 Scarp were built and were in service until 1980.
