Ordoñez M-1892 OHS 305mm

The 305mm Ordoñez M-1892 OHS coastal defence howitzer is the largest model of a series of weapons designed by artillery captain Salvador Ordoñez. The intention was to provide the Spanish Army with howitzers manufactured in Spain at a reduced cost but with adequate capabilities. These series were composed of 210, 240 and 305mm caliber howitzers and were manufactured by “Factoria Real de Armas de Trubia” (Trubia’s Royal Weapons Factory) through a system called “zunchado” (hounched). The barrel was cast iron with a screw lock and Broadwell plug. There was a battery of four 305mm M-1892 howitzers upon the Montjuic Castle, Barcelona, which is currently visitable. This was the so-called “Bateria Alvarez de Castro” and was the only one to have this type of pieces in service. These howitzers entered service in 1892 and were still in service at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, covering the entrance and the surroundings of the Barcelona’s seaport.
