KANIN class
The eight Kanin class ASW destroyers were originally designed as “rocket carriers” of the Krupny class and were the first guided missile destroyers of the Red Fleet. The main role was the anti-ship fighting and they carried two SS-N-1 Scrubber anti-ship missile launchers. They were located one forward and one aft, and the armament was completed with four quadruple 57mm AA gun mountings. When the SS-N-1 missile was outdated in the mid-1960s, it was decided to convert this destroyers to anti-submarine role. Works were carried out between 1968 and 1977 in the Zhdanov and Komsomolsk shipyards. After conversion, the SS-N-1 launchers were replaced by a SA-N-1 “Goa” SAM missile launcher at stern and by a RBU-6000 ASW mortar in the bow. In addition, two more RBU-6000 ASW mortars were added to the sides of the mast tower and the 533mm triple torpedo mountings became quintuplets. Regarding the 57mm guns, only the two bow assemblies were maintained. The bridge was enlarged, and the ship’s electronics were improved, installing a MF-type bow sonar among other devices. A helicopter pad was installed to operate a Ka-25 Hormone, but without maintenance facilities. The eight vessels were decommissioned between 1987 and 1993.
