2S31 VENA

In 1997, a new self-propelled mortar designed as 2S31 Vena was introduced. The vehicle’s hull is a modified BMP-3 ICV chassis equipped with a turret. This turret is equipped with an automated firing system, an optical-electronic lens acquisition system, a positioning system and a 120mm rifled gun/mortar. The mortar is the 2A80 model, derived from the 2A51 that carries the 2S9 Nona-S system, but with greater range. This weapon can be used as a mortar or as a gun. As gun the range reaches 13 km, much more than the 7 km reached as mortar. The vehicle is fully amphibious and is propelled in water by two waterjets, reaching 10 km/h when sailing. This system can be launched in parachutes, so it is suitable to operate with Airborne Forces providing an accurate and powerful fire support. The 2S31 Vena has been exported to Azerbaijan, with 18 examples, and it is in service with the Russian army, although in lesser quantity than 2S9 Nona vehicle.
