USS LONG BEACH
The USS Long Beach was the World’s first nuclear-powered surface ship thanks to its two C1W reactors, the same ones carried by the CVN-65 USS Enterprise aircraft carrier. It was also the first entirely missile-armed ship when it entered service in 1961 and has also been the largest combat ship built for the US Navy since the end of World War II. This ship had several designations, the first was CLGN-160 during its design, later it was changed to CGN-160 and shortly after, in July 1957, it was definitively named CGN-9. It had installed the AN/SPS-32 and AN/SPS-33 radars as well as the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier, which gave her the characteristic and huge command tower. It participated in the Vietnam War quite successfully, carrying out the first shoot down of a North Vietnamese MiG fighter using SAM missiles launched from a ship.
