TAI / Agusta-Westland T-129 ATAK
In 2007 with the need to replace their veterans AH-1P and AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopters, Turkey signed an agreement with Agusta-Westland (now Leonardo) company for the development of a new light attack helicopter based on the Agusta A-129 Mangusta and designated as T-129 Atak. The contract specified the assembly in Turkey of a first batch of 51 helicopters by TAI (Turkish Aerospace Industries), with the option of a second batch of 40 more helicopters. In 2009, a first prototype made in Italy was presented and another one manufactured in Turkey was presented in 2011. The TAI company would be responsible for development of new avionics, weapons systems, self-protection equipment and a mission computer. The first nine helicopters entered service in 2014 under designation T-129A, a simplified variant lacking anti-tank UMTAS missiles, but due to operational needs had to be put into service. The rest of T-129 helicopters will be T-129B variant, optimized for multirole tasks and will enter into service with all their weapons and equipment.
