RDS.4 / MK-1 “Tatyana bomb”
The Soviet RDS-4 or Mk.1 nuclear bomb, was the first tactical bomb in the Soviet Union arsenal. This free fall bomb could be launched not only by strategic bombers, which was a great technical breakthrough. The bomb was developed after tests carried out in the Semipalatinsk test range, on August 23, 1953. The test was named as Joe-5 by the Americans, and that day an Ilyushin-28 aircraft dropped the bomb from a height of 11,000 meters to explode 600 meters above the ground. The bomb produced a yield of 28 Kilotons and it was decided to be mass produced. These bombs were in service from 1954 to 1965 and were nicknamed Tatyana among the military. Its explosive charge was modified to be installed on the IRBM R-5M / SS-3 Shyster missiles.
