The Chinese Type 96 MBT entered service in 1997, and has since become the backbone of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) armored forces. It is a second generation tank that is an evolution of the Type 85-III MBT, which in turn can be considered the final evolution of the Type 88 MBT. The Type 96 MBT has been modernized and currently there are 3 variants in service, the second generation Type 96 variant, and the more modern third generation Type 96A/G and Type 96B variants.
