Type 89 IFV

In 1981, the Japanese Ministry of Defense provided funds for the construction of a prototype of a new infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), since the fleet of armoured vehicles of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) lacked this type. By 1984 four prototypes designated “Type 89 IFV” were available for testing, all built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries with Komatsu Limited as a subcontractor. After passing the new vehicle a demanding period of tests, it was decided to purchase 300 vehicles, whose delivery has not yet been completed.
