PRYMOR’YE class

The Prymor’ye spy ships class entered service with the “Red Fleet” in the late 1960s with the mission of collecting information from the electronic and radio signals emitted by enemy warships. They have the appearance of merchant ships and were the first in the Soviet Navy to have the capacity to analyze on board the data obtained, although they could not transmit it to ground in real time. They patrolled around the missile test areas of the Western Navies as well as near the US coasts and the Space launch bases. They had their base in Sevastopol and belonged to the Black Sea Fleet and their names were: Kavkaz, Krym, Prymor’ye, Zabaykalye, Zakarpatye and Zaporozhye. Currently all vessels have been retired after almost 40 years of service.
