McDonnell Douglas F-4E/F PHANTOM II
The F-4E Phantom II was the most numerous variant of the entire series, with 1,387 delivered aircrafts. This variant had a six barrel Vulcan M-61A1 gun installed under the nose, which had to be lengthened. The previous versions did not have any fixed gun, and this had been shown as a disadvantage in certain missions during the Vietnam War. They also carried a new solid state APQ-120 radar, a new rear fuel tank, an improved weapon control system, the F-4J‘s slotted stabiliator and more powerful J79-GE-17 engines. This variant was exported to many countries such as West Germany, Egypt, Greece, Iran, Israel, Japan (which built them under license), South Korea and Turkey. Although most countries have already withdrawn them, Japan, Turkey, Iran and South Korea keep them in service with improved and modified avionics, electronics and weapons systems.
