Fairchild A-10 THUNDERBOLT II / WARTHOG
During the Vietnam War it became clear that supersonic aircrafts were very ineffective in providing close support to troops caught in the usual Vietcong ambushes. This was the reason why the USAF requested in 1967 an exclusive aircraft for this type of task, and this is how the Fairchild A-10 Thunderbolt II, (Warthog for pilots), was born. The aircraft has become world famous thanks to its unique appearance and its 7-barrel rotating Gatling gun installed in the nose, the huge 30mm GAU-8 Avenger. The effectiveness of the aircraft is shown by the fact that more than 40 years after its entry into service, the USAF currently has almost 300 A-10 operational.
