BANDKANON 1

In 1949 studies began to provide the Swedish Army with a new model of a 155mm self-propelled gun/howitzer (SPH), but it was not until 1953 when the project received the definitive boost when the “Emil heavy tank project”, also known as “Project 6400” and “Kranvagn (KRV)”, was canceled. Then, it was decided to use one of the two prototype chassis to build a new SPH prototype designated “Artillerikanonvagn 151 (Akv 151)”, which was completed in 1960 but which after 3 years of trials and modifications was canceled. Finally, Bofors developed a new vehicle based on the S-tank MBT chassis that ended up being the “15.5cm bandkanon 1 (15.5cm bkan 1)” self-propelled howitzer, better known as “Bandkanon 1” o “VK-155”. In this way, the Swedish Artillery had one of the most modern and powerful self-propelled gun/howitzer in the world for more than 35 years.
