Avro SHACKELTON AEW.2

The Avro Shackelton AEW.2 is an airborne early warning aircraft resulting from the conversion of 12  maritime patrol Shackelton MR.2. An AN / APS-20 radar was installed as an interim measure until the acquisition of a new aircraft for these necessities. This conversion took place in 1971 when the Fleet Air Arm’s Fairey Gannet AEW.3, that covered the North Sea and the North Atlantic areas, were retired from service. The 12 Shackelton AEW.2 were assigned to No.8 Sqn based in Lossiemouth, northeast Scotland, and they served much more than advisable for their old airframes. That was due to the delays and development problems with the future Nimrod AEW.3, which was finally cancelled in 1986. All Shackelton AEW.2 received their well-deserved rest and were retired in 1991 with the arrival of the most capable and powerful E-3 Sentry.
