AGM-84E HARPOON SLAM
In the mid-80s it was decided to start the development of an air launch version of the widely used Harpoon anti-ship missile. In only 4 years the works resulted in the “AGM-84E Harpoon SLAM, (Standoff Land Attack Missile)”. A GPS receiver, a guidance system from the Walleye bomb, a new datalink from the Maverick missile and a Tomahawk cruise missile’s warhead were assembled in the structure of the Harpoon anti-ship missile, giving rise to this new version. They had the advantage of being able to be launched by the same aircraft that already had the anti-ship version in its arsenal, so it was a great option to expand the missions of aircraft already in service. Some examples were used in the Persian Gulf War of 1990 and later in the Operation Joint Endeavor over Bosnia. At the beginning of the year 2000, began to be replaced by the most capable AGM-84H SLAM-ER.
