The Hazeltine AN / APS-82 radar detected targets at 480 km distance. This radar was able to distinguish aircraft from the echo of sea waves by comparing video images with radar reflected energy.Tracers fought hardly during Vietnam War, but around 1965 were replaced by the powerful E-2 Hawkeye. Eighty-eight E-1B Tracer aircrafts were withdrawn before 1973, when only four remained active until 1977 based at the Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia.
