On September 1, 1949, an USAF’s WB-29 aircraft collected radioactive particles on a flight from Japan to Alaska. After careful analysis, it was determined to be the remains of a nuclear explosion. This discovery caused great surprise in the United States and Great Britain because both countries thought that USSR would not be able to obtain “the bomb” until 1953 or 1954.
