USS Range Sentinel had a very long career of more than 50 years, although it is true that she spent 11 years in the reserve, from 1958 until 1969. It belonged to a class derived from the famous “Victory” class freighter ships.The ship monitored the launching of 509 missiles from Poseidon, Polaris and Trident types launched from submarines and from the Launch Complex 46 off the Florida coast. The ship was designated as Missile Range Instrumentation Ship or AGM.The conversion took place from October 1969 to April 1971. Modern communication and missile tracking and monitoring equipment was installed. Her operation area was limited at 30 miles east of Cape Canaveral, where it was placed near the submarines that performed the missile tests. The task of the ship was to photograph the launches and make the relevant measurements.
