OSHIO class gallery

(SS-561 Oshio). With the Oshio class, Japan returned to have submarines capable of reaching great depths endowed with a greater defensive capacity than the previous classes, which were basically coastal types. Thanks to their larger size they were able to install modern electronic equipment and greater offensive capacity.
The SS-562 Asashio was the second of this class to be finished, and the first “standardized”. That is, it would be taken as the basis of the remaining three. The performance was similar to foreign Navies’s submarines of that time, reaching 18 knots submerged and reaching a remarkable range of about 9,000 nautical miles.
