L-35 Lf gallery
This
L-35 Lf
belongs to the Bovington Tank Museum’s collection. It is clearly visible as the flamethrower replaces the second 8mm Breda Model 38 frontal machine gun. Thirtheen examples participated in the Spanish Civil War with the Nationalist troops.
An engine driven pump, located in the rear of the vehicle, was responsible to feed the flamethrower through a pipe, and unused fuel was returned to the trailer through another pipe. The flamethrower was turned on and off by an engine powered electric ignition system.
The trailer contained 500 liters of flammable liquid that fed the flamethrower gun. A semi-rotary manual pump, located at the rear of the trailer, was used to refuel, de-fuel and perform the fuel mixture that was used.
The
L-35 Lf
was very effective in the Second Italo-Abyssinian War, but in WWII it was not the case. The vehicle was poorly protected to withstand the fire from the enemy defenses, so it was easily destroyed. The trailerless model was especially effective in the fight against the Yugoslav partisans.
The 500 liters of liquid could maintain a continuous stream during 2 minutes and 15 seconds, although the usual thing was to throw bursts of 2 or 3 seconds. The maximum range was about 40 meters, although according to certain sources it could reach 100 meters.
